Opera News describes Texan, Jan Cornelius as a "wonderfully attractive soprano with a solid core, tipped with a silvery edge." She has most recently debuted the roles of Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro with Fort Worth Opera and Tatiana in Eugene Onegin with Des Moines Metro Opera. She has sung leading roles with Opera Santa Barbara, Birmingham Opera, Atlanta Opera and Virginia Opera. This season she makes her debut with Kentucky Opera as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, returns to Birmingham Opera for Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, and debuts Marguerite in Austin Lyric Opera's production of Faust. She is a graduate of the prestigious Academy of Vocal Arts where she sang a wide repertory of roles including Arabella (Arabella), Giorgetta (Il tabarro), Donna Elvira, Mimì, Countess Madeline (Capriccio), Anna Bolena, Silvana (La Fiamma), and Violetta (La traviata). As a Spectrum Resident Artist with Virginia Opera, she performed the roles of Frasquita in Carmen, and Nedda in I Pagliacci. 

Ms. Cornelius has distinguished herself in numerous competitions. She most recently won the Ft. Worth Opera/Mc Cammon Opera Guild Competition in May 2012, as well as receiving top prizes in the Marcello Giordani Competition in March. She has earned first prize in the Giulio Gari International Vocal Competition and the Gerda Lissner Vocal Competition. In both 2009 and 2010, she represented the Mid-Atlantic Region as a semifinalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Competition and received grants from Opera Index. She was also awarded second prize by the Licia Albanese–Puccini Foundation, the Fritz & Lavinia Jensen Foundation, and the Loren L. Zachary Society. In 2009, she made her international competition debut as a finalist in the prestigious Monserrat Caballe International Vocal Competition in Zaragoza, Spain.

Jan Cornelius attended Louisiana State University, received her masters at the University of Houston, Moores School of Music, and completed her studies at the Academy of Vocal Arts in 2011.
